The Morgan Silver Dollar, designed by George T. Morgan, was first minted by the United States Mint in 1878 and continued its production until 1904, with the last coins struck in 1921. This dollar coin has been a significant part of American currency throughout various historical eras, including the Reconstruction Era, the Gilded Age, and the Roaring 20s. Obverse

On the obverse side, the 1900-O Morgan Dollar Coin showcases Lady Liberty in a left-profile relief. It is believed that Morgan used Anna Willes Williams as the model for this image. Liberty is depicted wearing a Phrygian cap, along with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown, all surrounded by 13 stars. The inscriptions read LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1900.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1900-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features a heraldic eagle, which notably does not have a national shield in Morgan’s rendition. The eagle is shown in a front-facing stance, wings spread wide, clutching arrows of war in one talon and an olive branch symbolizing peace in the other. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.

History

As the 20th century began, the Morgan Dollar was struck for the 23rd time in 1900. The coins were minted at the Philadelphia Mint, the New Orleans Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. A total of nearly 28 million Morgan Dollars were produced that year, with New Orleans leading the way at 12.59 million coins. Philadelphia followed closely with 8.83 million coins, while San Francisco issued 3.54 million coins.
