The Liberty Head series in the $20 Double Eagle Gold issue was available from 1850 to 1907. It was one of several coins that would eventually undergo a transformation in its designs in the early 20th century as the United States Mint and the federal government sought to modernize the artwork on American coins. The turn-of-the-century issue of the Liberty Double Eagle in 1900 was one of the final years the classical Greco-Roman imagery of Liberty would feature on major American coins. Provident Metals currently has 1900 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins available to you for purchase online.

Obverse

Lady Liberty is found on the obverse of 1900 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins in the classic Liberty Head design. The left-profile portrait of Liberty shows most of her hair up in a bun at the back with strands of curls hanging down her head and neck. She wears a coronet crown in her hair that reads Liberty. 13 stars encircle most of her portrait with 1900 inscribed at the bottom.

Reverse

A modified version of the Great Seal of the United States features on the reverse of 1900 Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins. This design was produced by James B. Longacre, along with the obverse, and was unique to the Double Eagle in the US Eagle Series. It depicts the bald eagle in front-facing relief with a larger US national shield on its chest, the arrows of war in one talon, and the olive branch of peace in the other. An ornate banner runs along both sides of the shield with E Pluribus Unum inscribed. Rays of sunshine stretch from wingtip to wingtip above the eagle. These coins have the modified circle of 13 stars above the eagles head with In God We Trust inscribed.

History

The Liberty Head design was the longest-used in the US Eagle Series. It featured on the US Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle from 1838 to 1907, a nearly-70-year run. On the Double Eagle, the Liberty Head design featured for 57 years from 1850 to 1907.
