The Liberty Head Double Eagle was the original design series for the $20 Gold Double Eagle coins minted by the United States Mint. Created in 1849 by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, this design graced coins from 1850 to 1907. Currently, Provident Metals offers the 1900-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins in About Uncirculated condition.
Highlights:
All 1900-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins offered here are in About Uncirculated condition. This means they show medium to near-full luster with very light wear on the highest points of the coin, falling within the AU range on the Sheldon numeric scale between 50 and 58.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1900-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin displays a portrait of Lady Liberty. This design depicts Liberty’s head in left-profile relief, adorned with a coronet crown. Surrounding her are 13 stars, with the date mark of 1900 positioned at the bottom of the field. The inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1900.
Reverse
On the reverse side, the 1900-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin features the Great Seal of the United States. The bald eagle faces forward, supporting the national shield while holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The Type III reverse design includes the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST in a ring of 13 stars above the eagle, a feature introduced in 1866, along with the denomination clearly engraved as TWENTY DOLLARS. Other inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the S mint mark.
History
In 1900, the $20 Double Eagle Coin was produced at just two of the United States Mint’s branch mints. The San Francisco Mint struck a total of 2,459,500 coins, featuring its S mint mark on the reverse. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Mint issued coins without a mint mark, totaling 1,874,460 coins.
