Obverse

On the obverse of the 1901-O Morgan Dollar Coin, you’ll find a left-profile bust of Liberty. This classic 19th-century depiction shows her head in left-profile relief, adorned with a coronet crown, a laurel wreath in her hair, and a Phrygian cap on the back of her head. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1901.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1901-Morgan Dollars features the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design presents the bald eagle in front-facing relief, spreading its wings and clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. Notably, this design does not include a US national shield. Inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.

History

Opened in 1838, the New Orleans Mint was one of three branch mints established to expand the nation’s coining capacity. While it closed during the Civil War and remained dormant during the Reconstruction Era, it reopened its doors in 1879.
