The New Orleans Mint played a significant role in the production of Morgan Silver Dollars throughout the program’s history. After reopening in 1879 following the Civil War and Reconstruction, the mint wasted no time in striking Morgan Dollars. However, the mint ceased production in 1904 and was unable to strike Morgan Dollars in 1921 after its closure in 1909.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1902-O Morgan Dollar Coins, you will find a captivating left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Designed by George T. Morgan in 1878, Liberty is portrayed wearing a coronet crown and a laurel wreath in her hair, with a Phrygian cap atop her head.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1902 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins features the majestic heraldic eagle, also created by George T. Morgan. This design showcases the bald eagle in front-facing relief, clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. Notably, this design does not include the US national shield.

History

The New Orleans Mint ceased coinage operations in 1861 due to the outbreak of the Civil War. During the war, it was briefly used to mint Confederate coinage. Coinage resumed at the New Orleans Mint from 1879 to 1909, primarily focusing on silver coin production, including Morgan Silver Dollars.

Ordering

All 1902-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin available at Provident Metals are in MS63 condition. Coins with this grade exhibit slightly impaired mint luster, with numerous small contact marks, scattered heavy marks, small visible hairlines, and the potential for detracting scuff marks.
