The Morgan Silver Dollar Series was first introduced in 1878 by the United States Mint. Designed by George T. Morgan, the coin brought new imagery of Liberty and the bald eagle to American silver dollars. After a break in production, the Morgan Dollar renewed interest in the denomination. It was issued each year from 1878 to 1904, and again for a short time in 1921. Right now, you can find certified 1902-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
All of the 1902-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins youll find here are graded as Mint State 65. These coins still carry a strong mint luster despite their age and show only minor, scattered contact marks, along with a few larger abrasions and light patches of hairlines.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1902-O Morgan Dollar Coin features Morgans portrait of Liberty. She is shown in left-profile wearing a Phrygian cap, crowned by a laurel wreath and a band inscribed with “Liberty.” Around her image are 13 stars representing the founding colonies. The inscriptions read LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1902.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1902-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, the heraldic eagle design appears. The eagle faces forward with its wings lifted. It holds arrows in one claw, symbolizing readiness, and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing peace. A wreath circles the lower half of the eagle, with the national motto above. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.
History
George T. Morgans attention to fine details and his talent in portrait design helped reshape U.S. coinage. His methods for transferring designs onto dies and his commitment to extensive preliminary work made his designs stand out.
