Liberty Double Eagles made at the San Francisco Mint give collectors a glimpse into the story of the California Gold Rush. These coins were struck with 90% gold and 10% copper, with the earliest versions made using gold collected through placer mining, a process that relied on natural water sources. As mining techniques advanced, later coins featured gold from hydraulic and hard rock mining. Right now, you can order 1902-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1902-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin ships in a protective plastic flip. These coins are offered in Extremely Fine (XF) condition, which means they display only light wear on the highest points of the design and may still show parts of their original mint luster.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1902-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin shows a portrait of Lady Liberty. This design by James B. Longacre presents Liberty in profile facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars circle the image, representing the original colonies. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1902.
Reverse
The reverse of 1902-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins includes a bald eagle with a shield on its chest, arrows and an olive branch in its claws, and a ring of stars overhead. This is the Type III version of the design, which includes the national motto and the denomination written as TWENTY DOLLARS. Other inscriptions include IN GOD WE TRUST, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the S mint mark.
History
San Francisco Double Eagles played a significant role in overseas trade, especially with China. These coins were valued for their reliable gold content and were often preferred over local money. In 1902, most of the Double Eagles struck came from the San Francisco Mint, which produced more than 1.75 million pieces, while Philadelphia made just over 31,000.
