Obverse
The obverse of the 1903 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin captivates with its portrayal of Liberty, a creation of the talented James B. Longacre. Liberty is elegantly adorned with a coronet crown in left-profile relief, surrounded by 13 shining stars. Inscriptions include 1903, and LIBERTY.
Reverse
On the reverse side, you’ll find a magnificent heraldic eagle design, also crafted by James B. Longacre. This striking image is a modified representation of the Great Seal of the United States, with the eagle gazing left, clutching a shield on its chest, and holding a bundle of arrows, an olive branch, and a double ribbon in its talons. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and TWENTY DOLLARS.
History
Unlike the quarter eagle, half eagle, and eagle, the double eagle didnt make its debut until 1849. Regular production began the following year, featuring the timeless Liberty head design by James B. Longacre, which graced these coins from 1850 to 1907. Although the design changed in 1933, these coins remained in circulation.
