The United States Mint launched the Morgan Silver Dollar Series in 1878. Featuring designs of Liberty and a bald eagle by George T. Morgan, this marked the nations return to minting silver dollars after a five-year pause. The Morgan Dollar was struck annually from 1878 through 1904, with a final release in 1921 after World War I. Right now, 1903 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available in certified condition from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic slab!
  • 26th issue in the Morgan Dollar Series!
  • Total mintage of 4,652,000 coins from the Philadelphia Mint!
  • Contains .7734 Troy oz of actual silver content.
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Issued a Grade of Mint State 65 by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
  • The obverse displays the image of Lady Liberty.
  • On the reverse is the heraldic eagle.

Each 1903 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin available here is graded Mint State 65. These coins still have strong mint luster, with minor contact marks, occasional larger marks, and a few small areas showing hairlines.

Obverse

The obverse side of 1903 Morgan Dollar Coins displays Morgans portrait of Liberty. Liberty is shown in left-profile relief, wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet with “Liberty” inscribed. Around her are 13 stars representing the original colonies. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1903.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1903 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin highlights Morgans depiction of a heraldic eagle. The small bald eagle appears with wings outstretched, holding an olive branch in one claw and arrows in the other. A wreath wraps from below, with the national motto inscribed above. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

George T. Morgan was quickly hired as an assistant engraver at the Philadelphia Mint thanks to his impressive skill. He went on to have a long career, eventually becoming the seventh Chief Engraver of the United States Mint in 1917. Over nearly 50 years, Morgan created many important designs, patterns, and medals, leaving a lasting legacy at the Mint before his death in 1925.
