Obverse

The $10 Liberty, also called the $10 Coronet type, features a portrait of Lady Liberty on the obverse. She is displayed wearing a crown (hence the “Coronet” nickname) with the inscription “LIBERTY” displayed prominently. Thirteen stars (as a reference to the original thirteen American colonies) are engraved towards the periphery. The coin’s date appears at the bottom. This design was first introduced in 1838 and remained in production until 1907. As such, the $10 Liberty ranks among the longest-running coin designs in American numismatic history.

Reverse

The $10 Liberty reverse depicts an eagle with outstretched wings. The bird clutches both arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This symbolized America’s interest in maintaining peace, as well as its ability to defend itself in war. Shortly after the Civil War, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” was placed above the eagle’s head; coins dated before 1866 will not show this inscription. The denomination is expressed as “TEN D.” and appears towards the bottom.

About the 1903-O $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin

As a category, New Orleans gold coins are among the most popular in American numismatics. They are a perennial favorite thanks to their high degree of rarity and intriguing historical background. Unlike the Philadelphia and San Francisco mints – which remain in operation today – the New Orleans facility was shuttered long ago. Even when it was operational, much of its bandwidth was dedicated to making silver coins. The New Orleans mint also experienced many years of downtime thanks to the Civil War. Thus, “O-mint” gold coins were issued in meager quantities and remain wildly scarce.

These 1903-O $10 Liberty Eagles are a great way to own a high-quality New Orleans gold coin at a reasonable price. Each coin is certified as Mint State 61 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). As Uncirculated specimens, they show no wear or loss of detail from use. The vast majority of $10 “Libs” grade no higher than VF or XF; Mint State examples are scarce and typically command a significant premium. These MS61 pieces allow collectors and investors to own an Uncirculated “O-Mint” $10 Liberty at an affordable price point.
