The second-last year of annual production for the storied “Morgan dollar” silver coin, a mainstay of American coinage and of numismatics, was 1903. Coins from the New Orleans Mint in this year were long sought-after on the collectors’ market, known as the “King of Morgan Dollars” due to their scarcity. They came within reach of the everyday collector with the discovery of the Hoard of Morgans in the 1960s, an untapped supply of almost three million Morgan dollars that were auctioned in the Seventies and Eighties by the General Services Administration. The Hoard brought back the 1903-O in relative abundance, but certain combinations of coin and packaging remain rarities, such as the 1903-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin in a GSA Soft Pack Holder.
Highlights:
This 1903-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin comes in a GSA Soft Pack Holder with a GSA plastic token that specifies its 90% fine silver contents. These coins come in Brilliant Uncirculated quality — grades of Mint State 60 or greater on the standardized Sheldon Scale — with varying amounts of marks and scratches but overall good visual appeal, and free of circulation wear. Provident Metals fully insures every order against any chance of mishap in transit.
Obverse
Lady Liberty wears a Phrygian cap on the obverse field, accompanied by the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1903.” Thirteen decorative stars appear at the coin’s rim.
Reverse
A heraldic eagle dominates the reverse field with a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. It’s accompanied by the “O” mint mark and the lettering “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
The revelation of the Hoard of Morgans in the Sixties saw the General Services Administration facing a colossal task: certifying, packaging, and preparing for auction a previously unsuspected supply of millions of uncirculated Morgan dollars. One of the earliest solutions to the question of packaging was the use of soft plastic inside a checkbook-style fold, a configuration that came to be known as the GSA Soft Pack. It was used for relatively few coins, however, with an estimated total of just around 100,000 coins begin sold in this format. Eventually, the rarity of this packaging itself became a selling point for collectors.
