“Morgan dollar” silver coins have long been some of the most prized pieces on the collectors’ market, known for a classic design, unusual size, and for being relatively accessible in uncirculated “mint state” grades, particularly so since the extraordinary discovery of previously untapped hoards in the 1960s. Perhaps the most sought-after specimens in this series are coins that came from the New Orleans Mint in 1903, most of which were placed in vaults due to not being needed for circulation, and the bulk of which were assumed to have been subsequently melted down until a large supply was discovered as part of the historic “Hoard of Morgans.” Provident Metals now offers the 1903-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin for online purchase in high-quality Mint State 65 condition.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in first-generation secure plastic “old rattler” packaging with a label certifying its PCGS-issued grade of MS/65!
  • Struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1903!
  • Contains 0.7734 Troy oz of Silver; comprised of 90% silver and 10% copper.
  • Face value of one dollar backed by the United States government.
  • The obverse field features Lady Liberty.
  • The reverse field features a heraldic eagle.

The 1903-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin has a grade of Mint State 65 certified by the leading third-party coin grading service PCGS. The grade on its label defines it as a highly desirable coin featuring above-average, fully original strike, and luster, with light and scattered contact marks appearing outside of prime focal areas.

Obverse

Lady Liberty appears on the obverse field wearing a Phrygian cap, along with by the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1903.” There are thirteen decorative stars at the rim.

Reverse

A heraldic eagle holds a bundle of arrows and an olive branch on the reverse field. It is accompanied by the “O” mint mark and the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

History

The “Morgan dollar” silver coin was first minted between the years 1878 and 1904, struck at branch mints in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Carson City, and New Orleans. 1903 coins bearing the New Orleans “O” mint mark became quite possibly the most prized entry in the extraordinary series, known for decades as some of the rarest Morgan specimens in existence. The legendary find of a large, previously unsuspected hoard of these coins in 1962 placed them at the heart of a kind of renaissance in the availability of Morgan dollars in high-grade qualities that forever changed the collectors’ market and made these spectacular items more affordable for the average collector.
