The Double Eagle was introduced by the United States Mint in 1849, shortly after the California Gold Rush significantly boosted the nations gold reserves. This $20 gold piece was the final coin added to the Eagle Series, which began in 1795. The Liberty design remained on the coin for most of its run, which lasted from 1850 to 1933. Provident Metals now offers 1903-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins for purchase.
Highlights:
Each 1903-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin offered here is in Mint State 64+ condition. Coins with this grade have strong visual appeal, some scattered contact marks, and possible small clusters of hairlines, along with solid luster.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1903-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin shows a portrait of Lady Liberty. James B. Longacre created this design, drawing inspiration from an earlier coin by Christian Gobrecht. Liberty is shown in left-profile relief, wearing a coronet crown and framed by 13 stars. Inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1903.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1903-S Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin displays the Type III design introduced in 1877. It includes the Great Seal of the United States beneath 13 stars, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS featured prominently. Additional inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the S mint mark.
History
Before the Double Eagle was introduced, the US Mint had already released the $10 Eagle, $5 Half Eagle, and $2.50 Quarter Eagle coins. These denominations were widely used for everyday purchases. However, the Double Eagle primarily served a different purpose, being favored for large financial exchanges and international trade from 1850 through 1933.
