The last year of regular, annual production for the famous “Morgan dollar” silver coin series was 1904: a particularly key date for the New Orlean Mint, which struck its very last Morgan coins in that year. These coins were represented in a vast hoard of almost three million uncirculated silver dollars discovered in the U.S. Treasury’s vaults in the 1960s, and even though they became one of the most abundant years on the collectors’ market as the General Services Administration auctioned them to the public in the 1970s and 1980s, certain combinations of years, mint marks and packaging remain rare. The 1904-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin in a GSA Soft Pack holder is a perfect example, now available from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in soft plastic packaging with a GSA token to confirm its silver contents!
  • Struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1904, the last Morgan dollar issue from that branch!
  • Contains 0.7734 Troy oz of Silver and is comprised of 90% silver and 10% copper, with a Brilliant Uncirculated finish.
  • Face value of $1 issued by the United States government.
  • Obverse field features Lady Liberty.
  • Reverse field features a heraldic eagle.

Contained in a GSA Soft Pack holder, the 1904-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin comes with a GSA plastic token that specifies its silver contents. These pieces feature Brilliant Uncirculated quality with grades of Mint State 60 or greater, indicating varying amounts of marks and scratches but overall good visual appeal free of circulation wear. Every shipment is fully insured by Provident Metals against damage or loss.

Obverse

The obverse field is dominated by an effigy of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, along with the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1904.” Thirteen decorative stars appear at the rim to represent America’s founding states.

Reverse

The reverse field features a heraldic eagle with a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons, along with the “O” mint mark and the lettering “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

History

The discovery of the GSA Hoard of Morgans in the 1960s was followed by a large-scale and long-term effort to package a prodigious supply of millions of uncirculated Morgan silver dollars. The earliest stages of that process saw a number of these coins encased in soft plastic packaging with a simple plastic token to certify that they contained the standard precious metal contents of a silver dollar from their era. It was not long, however, before the GSA made the transition to different packaging solutions, and experts estimate that only about 100,000 coins were sold in this packaging.
