The “Morgan dollar” silver coin is one of the most prized series in all of numismatics, prized for its classic design, substantial size and silver content, and relatively robust availability in high grades. Originally issued to provide more consistent access to silver dollars — the Bland-Allison Act of 1878 actually mandated that the US Treasury coin specific quantities of silver each month — it was struck at a number of branch mints between 1878 and 1904 and became an important coin to the growth of the American West. One of the most popular pieces to come from the New Orleans Mint specifically was struck in 1904: the 1904-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is now available from Provident Metals for online purchase.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a secure plastic container with a label to confirm its certified NGC grade of MS/64!
  • Struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1904!
  • Contains 0.7734 Troy oz of Silver and is comprised of 90% silver and 10% copper.
  • Face value of $1 backed by the United States government.
  • Obverse field features an effigy of Lady Liberty.
  • Reverse field features a heraldic eagle.

The 1904-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin has a grade of Mint State 64 certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC). Its grade indicates a coin with an average strike and luster and attractive eye appeal, with scattered contact marks, scuffs, and hairline scratches that may sometimes appear in prime focal areas. Provident Metals tracks and fully insures each shipment, delivered in a secure plastic container with a label that confirms its grade.

Obverse

An effigy of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap appears in the obverse field, accompanied by the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1904.” Thirteen decorative stars at the rim represent America’s founding states.

Reverse

The reverse field features a heraldic eagle holding a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons, along with the “O” mint mark and the lettering “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

History

The Numismatic Guaranty Company, or NGC, was founded in 1987 and has since issued certifications for more than 55 million coins, promoting the standardized Sheldon scale of coin grading recognized by coin dealers around the world. Many of those coins have been “Morgan dollar” silver coins from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A surprisingly large number of these legendary coins have survived for well over a century in uncirculated grades, specimens that escaped the wear and tear of circulation or being melted down for their silver content to become the all-time classics of the collectors’ markets.
