The $20 Double Eagle is a historic coin first issued by the United States Mint in 1850. As the largest gold denomination ever circulated in the U.S., this coin was minted with just two different designs during its 84 years in production. For the majority of that time58 yearsthe Liberty Head design graced its surfaces. Right now, 1904 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 1904 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins in this listing are graded MS62 and sealed in protective slabs. Mint State 62 coins may show clusters of small marks, larger blemishes in prominent areas, and visible hairlines, but still retain a fair mint luster. Please note that the coin you receive will be certified by either PCGS or NGC, with slab labels and grading houses selected at random. All coins are guaranteed to meet MS62 grading standards.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1904 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin, youll see a portrait of Lady Liberty. This iconic design by James B. Longacre was introduced in 1850 and depicts Liberty in left-profile relief wearing a coronet crown. The design is surrounded by 13 stars above and the year of issue below. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1904.
Reverse
The reverse of 1904 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins features the Type III design. At the center is an American bald eagle with the national shield, arrows, and olive branch. Above the eagle, the national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is displayed within a ring of stars. The denomination “TWENTY DOLLARS” is inscribed at the bottom, replacing the abbreviated “Twenty D” seen on earlier iterations of the series. The only other inscription on this field is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
History
In 1904, the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle achieved its highest production numbers in history. Coins were minted at the Philadelphia Mint and the San Francisco Mint, with totals of 6.256 million and 5.134 million coins, respectively. These combined numbers not only set a record for this design but also included the highest annual outputs from each mint for the series. Despite these high mintage figures, certified examples in Mint State grades remain scarce today.
