The production history of the Liberty Half Eagle covered one of the most transformative eras in American history. When Liberty Half Eagle design was created in 1838, the United States federal government had just paid off the national debt for the first and only time. In the decades to come, America would experience wars against Mexico, Spain, and internally between the North and the South. The Liberty Half Eagle was in production throughout these conflicts, as well as times such as Reconstruction, the Industrial Revolution, the Gilded Age, and even the Roaring 20s.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1904 Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins is a depiction of Lady Liberty. This left-profile bust of Liberty was created in 1838 by Christian Gobrecht. In this portrait, Liberty is shown with long strands of curled hair down the back of her head with a coronet crown in her hair. There is a ring of 13 stars around her bust with a date mark of 1904 at the bottom. The lone inscription on this field is the word LIBERTY on her coronet.

Reverse

The reverse side of 1904 Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins features the heraldic eagle of the United States of America. This design is based on some of the oldest American coin artwork. The image features a bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield on its chest. In this design, the eagle clutches the arrows of war in one talon and the olive branch of peace in another. The inscription on this face of the coin read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE D., and IN GOD WE TRUST.

History

The designs on the Liberty Half Eagle were developed by Christian Gobrecht in 1838. Gobrecht was, at this time, serving as an Assistant Engraver at the United States Mint. In 1840, he was elevated to the position of Chief Engraver of the United States. He was the fourth man to hold that title and would continue to do so until his death in 1844.
