The year 1907 was a pivotal one for the $20 Gold Double Eagle from the United States Mint. Since the coin’s introduction in 1850, the Liberty Head design created by James B. Longacre had been used. However, 1907 saw the debut of a new design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which would replace Liberty Head later in the year. The Denver Mint still struck some of the final Liberty Gold Double Eagles before this change. Right now, 1907-D Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are available in certified condition from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 1907-D Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins listed here come with a Mint State 64 certification from the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Coins with this grade feature above-average luster and a few light marks or hairlines. These coins may have small imperfections, but they remain in outstanding condition overall.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1907-D Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coin features the Liberty Head design. Created by James B. Longacre, it depicts Liberty in profile, wearing a coronet. She is surrounded by 13 stars, representing the original states, and the date of issue, 1907, is found below. The inscriptions here include LIBERTY and 1907.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1907-D $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin features the iconic bald eagle design. The eagle is shown with its wings spread wide, clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons, symbolizing the power of war and peace. As a Type III coin, this design also includes the national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” above the eagle, along with the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS. Other inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
History
In 1907, the Denver Mint issued this design for only the second time. The Liberty Gold Double Eagle design had been produced for over 50 years, but this marked the final year for its mintage. Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints all struck coins in 1907, with Denver issuing fewer examples than the other two locations.
