The obverse of the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is one of America’s most iconic coinage designs. An image of Lady Liberty is shown striding forward with the rising sun in the background. She holds a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The U.S. Capitol is shown towards the lower left. The inscription “LIBERTY” appears at the top of the coin.
The coin’s reverse shows a flying eagle above a rising sun. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS” appear towards the top of the reverse. On this particular issue, the legend “IN GOD WE TRUST” is conspicuously missing. Virtually all $20 Double Eagles made from 1866 through 1933 feature these words, but select 1907 and 1908 specimens do not. This omission is why the coin is known to collectors as the 1908 “No Motto” edition.
When the famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens redesigned the Double Eagle, he neglected to place the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the coin. The artist personally believed that religious references did not belong on U.S. currency. Most Americans disagreed, as did Congress. In 1908, a law was passed ordering the United States Mint to restore this emblem to the $20 Double Eagle.
Only some of the $20 Saints produced in 1908 lack this inscription. Thanks to their fascinating backstory, 1908 No Motto $20 Saints have become extremely popular among collectors. They are also scarcer than their With Motto counterparts, yet sell for a modest premium.
These 1908 No Motto $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles are graded Mint State 64 by NGC. In order to qualify for this grade, each specimen must display clean surfaces, strong luster, no signs of wear, a solid strike, and excellent eye appeal.
Each coin is housed in a sonically-sealed tamper-proof Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) holder. It is encased with a paper insert identifying the coin’s date and grade.

"
Purchased two 1908 no motto coins. One was spot on MS64 -- the second probably should have been rated higher than a 64, an impressive coin!"
