Obverse

The obverse of 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Coins presents a striking image of Lady Liberty. She stands facing forward in full figure, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The design includes the Capitol Building, a ring of stars, and radiant sun rays spreading behind Libertys figure. The inscriptions here include LIBERTY and 1908.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 1908 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin, the design highlights the American bald eagle. The eagle appears in left-profile relief, soaring over a rising suns beams. This side displays the nations name and the coins denomination. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS.

History

These 1908 $20 Double Eagles are identified as Type I coins. On the obverse, 46 stars encircle Liberty to represent the number of states in the Union when the design debuted. The Type I reverse does not include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST below the sun and its rays. Later in 1908, the mint added the motto to the reverse, and the obverse was updated in 1912 to include two more stars for New Mexico and Arizona.
