History

These 1908 $20 Double Eagles are identified as Type I coins. On the obverse, 46 stars encircle Liberty to represent the number of states in the Union when the design debuted. Later in 1908, the mint added the motto to the reverse, and the obverse was updated in 1912 to include two more stars for New Mexico and Arizona.
