One of the most iconic coins in American history is the $20 Gold Double Eagle. First introduced in 1907, this coin features an innovative depiction of Lady Liberty on its obverse. Among the unique issues in the series, the 1907 and early 1908 coins without the US national motto are especially sought after by collectors. Right now, 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins are available in certified condition from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins are available in Mint State 63 condition. Coins in this grade retain much of their original mint luster but may have several small contact marks, a few scattered heavier marks, and minor hairlines that can be seen without magnification.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle includes the figure of Lady Liberty in front-facing relief, surrounded by a radiant sunrise. The design is encircled by 46 stars, representing the number of states in the Union at that time. The U.S. Capitol Building appears at her feet in the background. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1908.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1908 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin, a majestic bald eagle soars through the sky. The eagle is featured in left-profile relief, gliding above a rising sun with rays spreading outward. These “No Motto” coins do not include the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST,” which was added later in 1908. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS.
History
The $20 Gold Double Eagle showcases a bold and dynamic depiction of Lady Liberty, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Liberty is shown striding forward confidently, holding a torch in one hand to symbolize enlightenment and an olive branch in the other as a sign of peace. This design brought a new level of artistry to American coinage and remains a favorite among collectors.
