The Liberty Head design series first came to the US Eagle Gold Coins in 1838. John Quincy Adams, son of the Founding Father and 2nd President John Adams, had just assumed the role of 8th President of the United States when this design first hit American hands in circulation. By 1908, America had fought three major wars, including the Civil War, and emerged on the world stage as a growing global power. 1908 marked the final year this stunning Liberty Head design would feature on the Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin. Provident Metals now happily offers 1908 Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins to you for purchase online.

Obverse

The obverse side of the 1908 Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin comes with a left-profile depiction of Lady Liberty. Known as the Liberty Head or Coronet Head design, it features Liberty wearing a coronet on her head with most of her hair up in a bun and just a few strands of curls down the side of her head and neck. There are 13 stars around her figure and a 1908 date mark on this face.

Reverse

On the reverse face of 1908 Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins is the heraldic eagle of the United States. This is the second version of the design and debuted on the coin in 1866. It features a front-facing bald eagle with a banner above its head that reads In God We Trust. That portion was added in 1866. Other inscriptions include United States of America and Five D.

History

The 1908 date mark in the $5 Liberty Half Eagle Series is one of the rarest despite being the most recently struck version. This is due in large part to the transition from the Liberty Head design to the new Indian Head design at the mint midway through the year. As a result, just 400,000 coins were produced at the Philadelphia Mint in 1908.
