The $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle began the final design chapter for the US Mints Pre-1933 $5 Gold Half Eagles. In 1908, the San Francisco Mint was among the facilities producing these coins for circulation. That years release reached a total of 82,000 coins, marking the first time the San Francisco Mint struck this design. Right now, 1908-S $5 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins in About Uncirculated condition are available at Provident Metals.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1908-S $5 Indian Half Eagle Coin shows a left-facing portrait of an indigenous figure wearing a feathered headdress. This was one of the first times in US coin history that an indigenous chieftain was featured. Around the portrait are thirteen stars, with six on the left and seven on the right. The inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1908.

Reverse

On the reverse of 1908-S Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins, the design depicts a bald eagle perched on arrows bound with an olive branch. Its wings are lowered at its sides, and the entire image is recessed into the coin, just like the obverse. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and FIVE DOLLARS.

History

The designs for both sides came from Bela Lyon Pratt. He used an incuse relief style, meaning the images are set below the surface of the coin. His artwork includes a standing eagle holding arrows and an olive branch, representing strength and peace. The incuse technique gave the designs a unique, shadowed appearance.
