The design on the $5 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coin was Americas first-ever incuse strike. Traditionally, coins are stamped with a design that is on the surface of the coin in 3D relief. An incuse strike stamps the design element into the surface of the coin, leaving a flat surface overall.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 1909 $5 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coin, you will find the left-profile portrait of an indigenous figure. This design was created in 1908 by Bela Lyon Pratt and depicts a stoic figure in left-profile relief wearing a feathered headdress. This design field includes a ring of 13 stars, as well as inscriptions of LIBERTY and 1909.

Reverse

The reverse field of 1909-D Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins comes with an image of the American bald eagle. In this design, the eagle is set in left-profile relief as it is perched at rest on a sheaf of arrows. The eagles wings are at its sides as it clutches the sheaf of arrows wrapped in an olive branch. Inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and FIVE DOLLARS.

History

The Indian Half Eagle Gold Coin was issued by several branches of the US Mint in 1909. These Denver Mint coins represent the largest portion of the mintage at more than 3.4 million coins, while the New Orleans Mint issued the fewest with just 34,200 coins.
