One of Americas longest-running coin designs is found on the small denomination of coinage still in production. The lowly US Penny has been available for most of the nations history and has undergone the fewest changes of any coin program. In fact, the design in use on the obverse of the Penny today is the same one that was introduced more than a century ago in 1909. Right now, you can get 1909 VDB Lincoln Wheat Pennies online at Provident Metals in certified condition.
Highlights:
With your purchase of the 1909 VDB Lincoln Wheat Penny online at Provident Metals, you will receive a certified version from the first year of issue for the Lincoln Penny. These coins have a Mint State 65 certification, indicating that each coin exhibits high-quality mint luster and has only a few noticeable flaws. These include either a handful of small, scattered contact marks or two larger marks. One or two small patches of hairlines are also possible, along with the potential for light scuff marks on the highest points of relief. The RD designation indicates a copper coin with red mint luster.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1909 Lincoln Wheat Penny features the first image of an American president to grace national currency. Designed in 1909 by Victor David Brenner, this right-profile portrait of Lincoln is based on a February 9, 1864, photograph of President Lincoln and is the longest-running singular design on an American coin. The inscriptions include IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and 1909.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 1909 VDB Lincoln Wheat Pennies is a depiction of two wheat stalks, lending the coin its popular name as the Wheat Penny or Wheat Cent. This design includes wheat stalks flanking the inscriptions of ONE CENT and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Above it, you will find E PLURIBUS UNUM inscribed, while below you will see the VDB initials of the designer.
History
The 1909 release of the Lincoln Wheat Penny is unique in the case of the VDB Wheat Penny. In the first year of issue, VDB specimens were struck only through August 1909. The US Mint heard backlash from the public and, supposedly, members of the Treasury, for the inclusion of Brenners initials. Many reportedly thought it was far too promotional for Brenner to include his initials so prominently. The mint had to decide between shrinking his initials down to a smaller B only or removing them altogether. The mint decided to strike the remaining 1909 pennies with no initials.
