The Indian Gold Half Eagle was the final design of the US Mints $5 gold coin before the series was discontinued. First introduced in 1908, the coin remained in circulation until 1933, though it was only produced from 1908-1916 and once more in 1929. Provident Metals is offering a three-coin set of early Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagles, each in Extremely Fine condition. Right now, 1910-1912 Pre-33 $5 Indian Half Eagle Gold 3-Coin Sets are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each of the Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagles in this 3-Coin Set comes individually encapsulated within a wooden, three-coin box. Each set includes one coin from each date, 1910, 1911, and 1912. With an Extremely Fine grade, these coins display only minor wear on the highest relief points, and some may retain a slight amount of original mint luster.
Obverse
The obverse of each Pre-33 $5 Indian Half Eagle features a left-facing portrait of an indigenous figure. While not modeled after a specific person, this representation marked the first time an indigenous figure appeared on a US coin. The figure wears a feathered headdress and is surrounded by 13 stars, the word LIBERTY, and the coins date. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and the respective 1910, 1911, or 1912 date marks.
Reverse
The reverse side of the $5 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coin presents an image of the American bald eagle perched on a sheaf of arrows. The arrows are wrapped in an olive branch, representing both strength and peace. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and FIVE DOLLARS.
History
The $5 Indian Half Eagle is known for its distinctive incuse strike, a design style where the images and inscriptions are pressed below the coins surface instead of raised in relief. Additionally, this series was the first US coin to depict an indigenous figure.
