The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is considered one of the standout coins of the Pre-33 era and remains highly popular with both collectors and gold buyers today. Featuring nearly one full ounce of gold and a design admired for generations, these historic US coins continue to hold an important place in American numismatics. Right now, 1911-S Pre-33 $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins in certified condition are available online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 1911-S Pre-33 $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins have been certified as Mint State 65 specimens by the PCGS. Coins with this grade show pleasing visual quality along with strong mint brilliance. Minor contact marks may be visible under close inspection, but larger distractions are generally absent from the primary focal areas of the coin.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1911-S Pre-33 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Coin is the classic Liberty figure created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Liberty is shown moving forward with a torch raised in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The Capitol building appears in the background alongside bright rays from the rising sun, helping create a bold and balanced design. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, 1911, and the S mint mark.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1911-S $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin displays an American bald eagle flying above the sun. Long sun rays extend outward behind the eagle while its wings spread across the field. The reverse design remains one of the best-known images in American coin collecting because of its realistic detail and strong visual appeal. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS, and IN GOD WE TRUST.
History
The San Francisco Mint produced 775,750 examples of the 1911-S Double Eagle. This issue is often viewed as one of the more difficult coins from the middle portion of the series to locate in higher grades. Collectors also value this release for the strong strike characteristics commonly associated with San Francisco Mint coins. The 1911 issue was the last in the series to feature 46 stars on the obverse before Arizona and New Mexico joined the Union in 1912, bringing the total to 48 stars.
