The Indian Half Eagle was the final design used for the $5 Gold Half Eagle minted by the United States Mint. Originally introduced in 1795, the $5 Half Eagle was produced through 1929 and circulated until 1933. The Indian Gold Half Eagle, the fifth and final design in the series, debuted in 1908. Obverse

The obverse of the 1912 $5 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coin features a left-profile portrait of an indigenous figure. This was the first American coin to include an indigenous person in its design. The individual is shown wearing a feathered headdress. The inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1912.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1912 Pre-33 Indian Half Eagle Coins depicts an American bald eagle. The eagle is shown perched on a sheaf of arrows, which is wrapped in an olive branch. This imagery represents strength in war and a desire for peace. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and FIVE DOLLARS.

History

In 1912, the United States Mint struck more than 1.1 million $5 Indian Half Eagles. The coins were minted at the Philadelphia and San Francisco branches, with Philadelphia producing 790,000 coins and San Francisco minting 392,000 coins. The series was originally issued yearly from 1908 to 1916 but saw its final production in 1929, following a pause during World War I. Despite production ending, these coins remained in circulation until 1933.
