Canadas first gold coins were produced in 1912 at the Ottawa Mint, which functioned at the time as a branch of Britains Royal Mint. These early coins were available in $5 and $10 denominations and carried a portrait of King George V, showing Canadas connection to the British Empire. Provident Metals now has 1913 $10 Canadian Reserve Gold Coins available for purchase online.
Highlights:
Each 1913 $10 Canadian Reserve Gold Coin is graded Mint State 63 and comes secured in a plastic slab. These coins may show mild wear in the form of contact marks, some heavier scuffs, and faint hairlines that are sometimes visible without a magnifying glass. You may receive a coin certified by either PCGS or NGC, but we cannot guarantee which one.
Obverse
The front side of the 1913 $10 Canadian Reserve Coin features King George V. His portrait is shown from the left side, with a crown on his head and detailed royal garments around his shoulders. All text on this side of the coin appears in Latin. The inscriptions include GEORGIVS V DEI GRA and REX ET IND IMP.
Reverse
On the back of the 1913 Canadian Reserve Gold Coin, the design features the Canadian coat of arms. This artwork is based on the 1868 version that was introduced after the formation of the Canadian Confederation. The shield includes symbols for the provinces involved in Confederation, along with imagery representing the United Kingdom. The inscriptions read CANADA, 1913, and TEN DOLLARS.
History
These coins had a short production run, ending in 1914 due to World War I. Fewer than 850,000 were struck before minting was halted. The coins offered here come from a group of about 300,000 that remained in storage for decades in the Bank of Canadas vaults. This collection includes both $5 and $10 coins from the years 1912, 1913, and 1914.
