One of the most famous gold discoveries of the 20th century in North America wasnt the location of a new gold mine or shipwrecked treasure, but rather, was the Bank of Canada gold hoard. The collection of Canadian Reserve Gold Coins represented the first-ever Canadian gold coins issued and was made available only in limited numbers to collectors in the 21st century. Provident Metals now has 1914 $10 Canadian Reserve Gold Coins available to you for purchase online with a certification from the PCGS or NGC.
Highlights:
When you purchase the 1914 $10 Canadian Reserve Gold Coin in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive a coin that is available with a certification of Mint State 63. A coin with this grade has slightly impaired mint luster with other flaws such as scattered hairlines or a small patch, several small contact marks that may present in the primary focal points, and the potential for a few heavier scuffs of defects. Overall, however, the coins have a rather attractive appeal.
Provident Metals selects your coin at random after your payment clears. We cannot guarantee whether the coin you get was graded by the PCGS or NGC. We can, however, guarantee that each coin is a 1914 Canadian Reserve Gold Coin with a $10 (CAD) face value and a Mint state 63 grade.
Obverse
King George V features on the obverse side of 1914 $10 Canadian Reserve Gold Coins. The effigy captures His Majesty in left-profile relief wearing the Imperial State Crown with inscriptions of GEORGIVS V DEI GRA REX ET IND IMP.
Reverse
An early version of the Canadian coat of arms is present on this face of the 1914 $10 Canadian Reserve Gold Coin. This design combines the individual coat of arms from the four provinces that held the Confederation Conference and formed the Dominion of Canada in 1867. Inscriptions on this side read CANADA, TEN DOLLARS, and 1914.
History
The gold coins of the Bank of Canada hoard were the first gold coins issued in the decimalized Canadian dollar. The coins were struck in denominations of $5 and $10 between 1912 and 1914. Due to World War I, few ever made it into circulation. The coins were first housed in secure bank vaults with various Canadian banks, then with the Department of Finance, before ending up at the Bank of Canada. Some 245,000 coins were discovered in the late 20th century, with only the best 30,000 coins made available to collectors. The rest were melted down by the Royal Canadian Mint.
