The portrait on this side is surrounded by several inscriptions that include the Spanish legend PATRI Y LIBERTAD, which translates as Freedom and Fatherland. Other inscriptions include 16.718 G, 1916, and 900 M.

Reverse

History

These 1916 Cuba Gold Coins were designed in the United States by US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber. These were among the final coins ever designed by Barber before his death in 1917. Barber became the 6th Chief Engraver in 1879, succeeding his father, William Barber, who had served as the 5th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1869 to his death in 1879.
