While the United States and Cuba are bitter adversaries today, there was a period of time when Cuba was a protectorate of the US and the United States Mint was actually responsible for striking the silver and gold coins used in circulation on the island. During the early 20th century, the United States oversaw Cuba as a United States Protectorate, supervising its foreign relations and finances. Provident Metals now has 1916 10 Peso Cuba Gold Coins available to purchase online.

The obverse of 1916 10 Peso Gold Coins shows a right-profile portrait of Jose Marti. A leading figure of the Cuban independence movement in the late-19th century, Marti was a poet and philosopher who was an outspoken advocate of Cuban independence from Spain. The portrait on this side is surrounded by several inscriptions that include the Spanish legend PATRI Y LIBERTAD, which translates as Freedom and Fatherland. Other inscriptions include 16.718 G, 1916, and 900 M.

On the reverse side of 1916 10 Peso Cuba Gold Coins is a depiction of the Cuban coat of arms. Developed during the period of Cuban independence as the Republic of Cuba, the seal features a spade-shaped shield with a wreath of oak and laurel around. The field includes inscriptions in Spanish of REPUBLICA DE CUBA and DIEZ PESOS, both of which translate as Republic of Cuba and Ten Pesos.

These 1916 Cuba Gold Coins were designed in the United States by US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber. These were among the final coins ever designed by Barber before his death in 1917. Barber became the 6th Chief Engraver in 1879, succeeding his father, William Barber, who had served as the 5th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1869 to his death in 1879.
