With your purchase of the 1916 5 Peso Cuba Gold Coin in this Provident Metals product listing, you will receive an item that is available with a PCGS certification. Coins with a Mint State 62 certification have a generally acceptable eye appeal, especially given the century-old date mark on the specimens. The mint luster may be dull or impaired and the coins will show flaws such as clusters of small marks and/or hairlines, but the major design elements remain noticeable.

Obverse

Jose Marti is found on the obverse of 1916 5 Peso Cuba Gold Coins. This design shows Marti in right-profile relief with inscriptions of PATRIA Y LIBERTAD, 8.359 G, 1916, and 900M. The inscription above Marti is the national motto of Fatherland and Freedom, while the other markings indicate the Gram weight of the coin, its date mark, and its gold purity. Gold coins of this era from the US Mint feature 90% gold and 10% copper.

Reverse

The Cuban coat of arms is found in the reverse design of the 1916 Cuba Gold Coin. The design shows a spade-shaped shield that is flanked by a wreath of oak and laurel with a Phrygian cap above the wreath. The inscriptions include REPUBLIC DE CUBA and CINCO PESOS.

History

The 5 Peso and 10 Peso gold coins issued for Cuba during its early era of independence came from the United States Mint. This period of time in Cuban history was one of economic prosperity that was powered largely by American investment in a national railway and the sugarcane industry. Charles E. Barber was the designer of the coins in the 5 and 10 Peso denominations, one of the last coin designs he would contribute to the US Mint before his death in 1916.
