The $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle marked the final design type in the US Mints Pre-33 $5 Half Eagle series. In 1916, the San Francisco Mint was the only location to produce $5 Half Eagles for circulation. The years mintage reached 240,000 coinsgreater than 1915s totaland this would be the last issue until the series resumed in 1929. Today, 1916-S $5 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins in Mint State condition are available online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 1916-S $5 Indian Half Eagle Gold Coins have a Mint State 61 grade. MS61 coins often display several heavy contact marks and a small patch of hairlines. Many pieces from 1916 show attractive luster with gold hues ranging from greenish to orange-gold.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1916-S $5 Indian Half Eagle Coin features a left-facing portrait of an indigenous leader. This image became one of the first designs on American coinage to focus on an indigenous subject, depicting a chief with a feathered headdress. Thirteen stars circle the portraitsix on the left, seven on the rightwith the date below. The inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1916.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1916-S Indian Half Eagle Gold Coin, youll find a strong American bald eagle. It rests on a bundle of arrows tied with an olive branch, its wings held close to the body. Both the obverse and reverse designs are incuse struck, pressed into the coins surface instead of raised above it. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and FIVE DOLLARS.
History
Bela Lyon Pratt introduced this incuse style in 1908, creating a profile of a Native American chief recessed into the metal. While some critics questioned the technique and its portrayal, it became one of the most distinctive designs in US coin history.
