Produced by the United States Treasury from 1862 to 1971, the United States Note was the first major form of paper currency issued by the United States government. The notes were originally available as large-sized notes that were up to 40% larger in size than the modern Federal Reserve Note issued in 1914. Few specimens remain from US Note collections, with the 1917 $1 Legal Tender Note among the more common still available to collectors. Provident Metals currently has 1917 $1 Legal Tender Notes available to you for purchase in fine condition.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual protective currency sleeve!
  • Produced in 1917!
  • Easily-recognizable effigy of President George Washington!
  • Issued a face value of $1 (USD) by the government of the United States.

When you purchase a 1917 $1 Legal Tender Note from Provident Metals, you will receive a US Note housed in a protective currency sleeve. The United States Notes offered here, also known as Legal Tender Notes, are in Very Fine condition. A paper note in fine condition shows only light-to-modest wear from use in circulation. These signs of wear are present only in the form of folds or creases with slight soiling also possible. The notes lack major detractions.

Obverse

The obverse side of the 1917 Legal Tender Note features a three-quarter profile effigy of President George Washington in left-profile relief. The Presidents effigy comes with a mural in the upper-left that recreates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World. Printed elements on this side of the note include United States above the portrait of Washington, 1 in the upper-right corner, One Dollar Washington D.C. in the lower-right field, and United States Note below the portrait of President Washington. Other details include a serial number on the left and right of the portrait, with a red US Treasury seal between the portrait of Washington and the mural in the upper-left field.

Reverse

On the reverse face of 1917 $1 Legal Tender Notes, you will find the third iteration of the reverse design on the $1 US Note. This field includes the denomination noted as 1 in the upper-right and lower-left corners, and noted as One in the opposing corners. The X at the center has United States of America printed on it. The left and right edges read One, with One Dollar printed in each of the corners.

History

The $1 United States Note was introduced in 1862 with an effigy of Salmon P. Chase in the upper-left field. The 1868 redesign brought with it President George Washingtons effigy, as well as a centering of the portrait in the middle of the notes field. The reverse design featured on these 1917 Series Legal Tender Notes is the third overall design, replacing the 1869 redesign that arrived with the debut of Washingtons effigy on the obverse.
