Obverse

President Thomas Jefferson features on the obverse side of 1917 $2 Legal Tender Notes along with the U.S. Capitol Building. President Jeffersons bust as shown here was introduced on the Legal Tender Note in 1869 and remains on the $2 Federal Reserve Note today with few changes made to the portrait imagery. At the center of the note is a depiction of the U.S. Capitol Building as it appeared in the late-19th century. The building was completed in 1800, partially destroyed in 1814 during the War of 1812, and restored within five years.

Reverse

Ornate design elements can be found on the reverse face of 1917 $2 Legal Tender Notes. The ornate field found here is the fourth reverse design used in the series and the second iteration of this particular visual element. The ornate field has a single, large 2 at the center with TWO printed above and below. Each of the corners also has a 2 printed within.

History

1917 Series Notes were not significantly redesigned on either the obverse or reverse. The most significant change was the shape of the US Treasury seal in the lower-right field on the obverse. The seal is smaller than previous issues and takes the form of a rosette. This was the final time the $2 denomination was modified before large-sized US Notes were reformatted in 1929.
