The 1918 $1 Federal Reserve Bank Notes hold a special place in the story of American money. Printed during the final year of World War I, these notes were issued by individual Federal Reserve Banks instead of through a single, national source. This created small variations across the different banks and reflects how the early Federal Reserve System worked. Provident Metals now offers 1918 $1 Federal Reserve Bank Notes in AU condition.
Highlights:
All 1918 $1 Federal Reserve Bank Notes available here come in About Uncirculated condition. AU notes keep much of their original color and crispness but show light signs of use, such as faint folds, minor bends, or small wrinkles. Each note may carry a different bank designation, but we cannot guarantee notes from any one particular bank.
Obverse
On the obverse, the 1918 $1 Federal Reserve Bank Note highlights a portrait of President George Washington at its center. Each note also carries identifying marks and numbers to indicate the Federal Reserve Bank that printed it.
Reverse
The reverse includes a decorative design surrounding the $1 denomination with American symbols such as the bald eagle and U.S. flag. This side features the green ink that became standard for U.S. currency.
History
Authorized by the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, these notes were tied to specific regional Federal Reserve Banks and backed by U.S. government securities. They differ from standard Federal Reserve Notes because they include bank-specific details and serial formats. During World War I, these notes circulated as legal tender while helping meet the rising need for currency.
