While several forms of American paper money were circulating at the same time in the 20th century, only two of those forms of money were directly backed by the Federal Reserve banking system and introduced in the 20th century. While United States Notes, National Bank Notes, Silver Certificates, and Gold Certificates were all introduced in the 19th century, the Federal Reserve Note and Federal Reserve Bank Note were both introduced with the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. Some famous designs from these series are still available to collectors today. This includes the 1918 $1 Flying Eagle Federal Reserve Bank Note available to you for purchase today at Provident Metals in Very Fine condition.
Highlights:
When you purchase one of these 1918 $1 Flying Eagle Federal Reserve Bank Notes, you will receive a specimen from Provident Metals that comes in an individual protective plastic sleeve to secure the Very Fine condition of the note. Paper notes in this condition have nearly full crispness with no loss of color to the ink. The notes may have slight fraying or rounding at the edges, but there are no major tears or signs of wear and tear. You may notice folds, wrinkles, or creases from circulation, but overall the piece has impressive visuals for a 100-plus-year-old note.
Obverse
The obverse of 1918 $1 Flying Eagle Federal Reserve Bank Notes comes with a vision of President George Washington. The portrait of Washington featured on these notes is a familiar variation of his portrait as it has appeared on United States Notes and Silver Certificates prior to this release, as well as Federal Reserve Notes. The portrait is accompanied by printed notations of the form of currency, face value, and special notations of The Federal Reserve Bank and Will Pay to the Bearer On Demand One Dollar. Each note will have its own branch of the Federal Reserve Bank System featured on the note, such as Dallas, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Chicago, Boston, or New York City. The serial numbers and Treasury seal are in blue ink.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1918 Flying Eagle Federal Reserve Bank Note is a depiction of the American bald eagle. In this design, the bald eagle is on a flagpole that features the American flag. The numeric value of the note is featured in each of the corners, with the text value printed above the design field.
History
Federal Reserve Bank Notes were backed by one of the 12 individual Federal Reserve Banks as noted by the name printed on the obverse. Federal Reserve Notes, the modern currency of the United States, are backed by all 12 branches collectively.
