Silver dollar coining in the United States has a fascinating history with some interruptions along the way. Among the many designs, the Morgan Silver Dollar stands out as an iconic American coin. First introduced in 1878, it experienced a 17-year hiatus before a final release in 1921. Right now, 1921 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic flip!
  • 28th and last year for the Morgan Dollar series!
  • Mintage of 44.69 million coins from the Philadelphia Mint!
  • Contains .7734 Troy oz of actual silver content in BU condition.
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD) backed by the U.S. government.
  • Obverse features Lady Liberty.
  • Reverse displays the heraldic eagle.

Each 1921 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin comes in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, housed in a protective plastic flip. This final mintage marked the close of a chapter for the Morgan Dollar series, which had first been struck in 1878. For 27 years, the coin circulated across America, with a concluding issue in 1921 following a long break in production.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1921 Morgan Dollar, youll find Lady Liberty in left-profile relief, with her head adorned by a Phrygian cap, coronet, and laurel wreath. The date and 13 stars complete the field, representing the original colonies. The inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM and 1921.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1921 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin showcases the American eagle, captured in a heraldic style with wings spread wide. It clutches arrows representing strength and an olive branch symbolizing peace. Both designs on the 1921 Morgan Dollar were created by George T. Morgan, who began as an Assistant Engraver in 1878 and went on to become the Mints 7th Chief Engraver. Morgans designs were brought back for this final mintage, leaving an enduring legacy. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

The 1921 minting of Morgan Dollars symbolized the return of silver dollar production in the U.S. The original Morgan Dollar series had ended in 1904, and during World War I, many silver dollars were melted down to support U.S. allies with bullion. Part of this silver was later used to reintroduce silver dollar coins in 1921, when the Morgan Dollar was struck for the final time before a new design took its place.
