The coining of silver dollars for circulation in the United States ended in the 1930s with the Peace Silver Dollar. Though subsequent coins were produced in the 1970s, these US dollar coins were cupro-nickel alloy and did not contain any silver. One of the longest-running designs in the US silver dollar series was the Morgan Silver Dollar. Today, you have the opportunity to get 1921 Morgan Silver Dollars in Fine condition online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a protective plastic flip!
  • Features a 1921 date mark!
  • Fine condition!
  • Contains .7734 Troy oz of actual silver content.
  • The face value of $1 (USD) is backed by the United States.
  • Lady Liberty features on the obverse of the coins.
  • American heraldic eagle is depicted on the reverse of the coins.

The Morgan Silver Dollar is so-named because of the man who designed the imagery on the obverse and reverse. George T. Morgan was a recent immigrant to America from the United Kingdom in the early 1870s when he was taken on as an apprentice coin designer at the Philadelphia Mint. His first major task was a redesign of the US silver dollar for the 1878 reintroduction of the denomination after the end of the Seated Liberty dollar in 1873.

Obverse

On the obverse face of 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins is a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. This design includes a ring of stars around the bust of Liberty. She is featured with a coronet and wreath crown on her head and her hair up in a loose bun behind her head. Anna Willis Williams sat through at least five portrait sessions with George T. Morgan as the model for his vision of Liberty.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1921 Morgan Silver Dollars includes Morgans version of the heraldic eagle. This design lacks the US national shield, but does feature the eagle in front-facing relief with its head looking to its right toward the talon clutching the olive branch of peace as the other talon clutches the arrows of war. Inscriptions include United States of America along the top rim of the design field, In God We Trust above the eagles head between its wings, and One Dollar at the bottom.

History

Morgan Silver Dollar coins were introduced in 1878 following a five-year hiatus in the coining of silver dollars. The design was produced each year through 1904 and then silver dollar production was suspended. When US silver dollar coining resumed in 1921, the Morgan Silver Dollar design was revived for the first several months of the year before being replaced in December 1921 by the new Peace Silver Dollar. With a 28-year run in production, only the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar was available longer than the Morgan at 38 years in total.

Ordering

These 1921 Morgan Silver Dollars are available in Fine condition. This means the design elements and inscriptions are still largely visible to some degree of detail, but the coins also feature moderate to heavy signs of wear and tear. Each coin is housed in an individual plastic flip.
