In the final month of 1921, the United States Mint launched a new silver dollar to close out the era of 90% silver coins meant for circulation. The Peace Silver Dollar was created as a tribute to the peace following World War I and would take over from the Morgan Dollar, which had been minted earlier that same year. Known for its high-relief design, the 1921 Peace Dollar is one of just a few U.S. coins ever produced in high relief for general circulation. Right now, certified 1921 Peace Dollar Silver Coins are available at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Comes with a protective plastic slab!
  • 1st issue of Peace Silver Dollars!
  • High-relief visuals!
  • Total mintage of 1,006,473 coins!
  • Contains .7734 Troy oz of actual silver content.
  • The face value of $1 (USD) is fully backed by the US government.
  • Graded About Uncirculated 55 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.
  • On the obverse is a portrait of Liberty.
  • The reverse features a bald eagle.

These 1921 Peace Dollar Silver Coins are offered in About Uncirculated 55 condition. You may notice only faint signs of wear on the highest points of the design and medium to nearly full original luster. All coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the only facility to produce Peace Dollars in 1921.

Obverse

The obverse of each 1921 Peace Dollar Coin displays Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, this image shows Liberty with loose hair flowing down and a tall crown made of radiant beams atop her head. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRVST, and 1921.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 1921 Peace Dollar Silver Coin, an American bald eagle is shown sitting calmly on a rocky perch. The bird clutches a young branch in its talons while rays of sunlight stretch out from the horizon in the background. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, and PEACE.

History

The Mint held off on Peace Dollar production until December 1921, spending time to prepare a fresh design. Most silver dollars issued that year were Morgan Dollars, as the new concept was still being finalized. The 1921 Peace Dollars high-relief format required added pressure to strike, which led to frequent issues such as die breakage and limited durability. Many coins from this mintage show lighter or incomplete design features as a result.
