The $20 Double Eagle coin was introduced by the United States Mint in 1850 as the largest denomination in the US Eagle Series. This iconic coin was minted with just two different designs during its production history. The final design, created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, debuted in 1907 and is often referred to as the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Today, 1925 Pre-33 $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins in certified condition are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1925 Pre-33 $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin in this listing is certified Mint State 64 by the Professional Coin Grading Service. Coins at this grade show average luster for their age, with minor groups of contact marks or small patches of hairlines possible. In 1925, Philadelphia struck 2.831 million of these coins, with additional coins minted in Denver and San Francisco.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1925 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle depicts Lady Liberty holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. She is set against a background of sun rays and the U.S. Capitol, with 48 stars encircling the design to represent the states in the Union at the time. Inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1925.
Reverse
On the reverse of 1925 Pre-33 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins, Saint-Gaudens created a majestic image of an American bald eagle in flight. The eagle is shown gliding effortlessly above the rising sun, with radiant sunlight extending from the horizon. The inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS, and IN GOD WE TRUST.
History
The stunning detail in Augustus Saint-Gaudens design is a hallmark of this coin. His depiction of Liberty in a Grecian gown is incredibly lifelike, with the fabric appearing to flow naturally as she strides forward. When the coin was initially struck, its high-relief design presented significant challenges at the mint, requiring multiple strikes for full detail and resulting in quick wear to the dies. This led to modifications in the relief for subsequent production.
