Obverse

The obverse of the 1926 $2.50 Sesquicentennial Coin depicts Lady Liberty standing tall. She holds a torch in her right hand, symbolizing progress, and a scroll in her left hand, representing knowledge and governance. The dates 1776 and 1926 are inscribed, commemorating the nations 150 years of independence. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, 1776, and 1926.

Reverse

On the reverse of 1926 Sesquicentennial Gold Coins, the design features Independence Hall in Philadelphia. Originally constructed in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House, Independence Hall played a central role in American history as the site where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were debated and signed. It remains a powerful symbol of the nations democratic ideals. Inscriptions here include SESQUICENTENNIAL OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 2 1/2 DOLLARS.

History

In 1926, communities across the United States came together to celebrate the nation’s 150th anniversary through parades, reenactments, and educational programs. Philadelphia, the focal point of these celebrations, invested in preserving its historic landmarks, such as Independence Hall. John R. Sinnock, the newly appointed 7th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, designed this commemorative coin to reflect the nations enduring spirit and heritage.
