In 1926, the United States celebrated 150 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. To mark the event, the U.S. Mint released a special $2.50 gold quarter eagle. Provident Metals now offers 1926 $2.50 Sesquicentennial Gold Coins in Extremely Fine condition, providing collectors with a tangible reminder of this historic milestone.
Highlights:
Each 1926 $2.50 Sesquicentennial Gold Coin is housed in a protective flip and offered in Extremely Fine+ condition. These coins display light wear limited to the raised design elements and retain most of their original detail.
Obverse
The obverse design of 1926 $2.50 Sesquicentennial Gold Coins shows Lady Liberty wearing flowing robes. She holds a parchment in her left hand to represent the Declaration of Independence and carries a lit torch in her right hand. The dual anniversary dates are also displayed on this side. The inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, 1776, and 1926.
Reverse
On the reverse of 1926 Sesquicentennial Gold Coins, Independence Hall stands as the central image. Designed by U.S. Mint Engraver John R. Sinnock, the coin had an authorized mintage of 200,000 pieces. Despite the full number being struck, sales lagged and many were melted, leaving about 46,019 coins that remained in existence. Inscriptions here include SESQUICENTENNIAL OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 2 1/2 DOLLARS.
History
The nations 150th celebration was centered in Philadelphia, the birthplace of American independence. From June through November, the Sesquicentennial International Exposition featured displays highlighting the countrys advances in technology, industry, and culture. Although ambitious in scope, the event faced limited attendance and financial hurdles.
