The $20 Saint-Gaudens double eagle first appeared in 1907 as part of President Theodore Roosevelts effort to bring new artistry to US coins. He turned to the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create designs that would stand out alongside the finest coins of the past. Today, collectors can find certified 1927 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1927 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin offered here carries a Mint State 65+ grade. An MS65 coin shows strong overall luster, appealing detail, and only minor marks in the fields. The plus designation points to coins at the upper range of MS65 quality.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1927 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Coin is a full-length image of Lady Liberty. She advances forward with a torch raised in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The U.S. Capitol is placed near her feet, with sun rays fanning out behind her. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1927.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1927 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin includes a bald eagle soaring above the sun on the horizon. The bird is shown in left-profile relief. Type III coins have a lower relief, Arabic numerals for the date, and display the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Additional inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS.
History
The 1927 release was the last year three different mints struck Double Eagles at the same time. Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco all contributed to production in 1927. In later years, Philadelphia carried most of the output. Only Philadelphia issued the 1928, 1929, 1932, and 1933 coins. San Francisco was the sole mint for 1930, while both Philadelphia and Denver issued coins in 1931, though Denver made only 106,500 out of a total of more than 3 million that year.
