The $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was introduced in 1907 during President Theodore Roosevelts effort to bring more artistry into U.S. coinage. Roosevelt invited Augustus Saint-Gaudens, a well-known sculptor, to create new designs that would give American coins a look equal to the great pieces of classical Greek art. Today, certified 1927 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins are available online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 1927 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins are certified Mint State 66 (MS66). In this grade, coins display bright mint luster with only a handful of light contact marks. A few faint hairlines may be seen under magnification, with very minimal marks in the primary focal areas.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1927 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Coin presents Lady Liberty in full-length relief. She steps forward holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The U.S. Capitol is visible at her feet with sun rays stretching out in the background. The inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1927.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1927 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin shows an American bald eagle in flight. Viewed in left-profile relief, the eagle glides over a rising sun. As a Type III issue, the coin was struck in lower relief, includes Arabic numerals for the date, and bears the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The additional inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS.
History
Saint-Gaudens drew inspiration from classical Greek and Roman themes, especially the figure of Victory. His reimagining of Liberty as a bold, forward-moving image replaced earlier coin portraits that were more static. His study of ancient coinage, particularly Greek dekadrachms, helped shape this admired design.
