The Peace Dollar was first released in 1921, replacing the long-running Morgan Dollar series. Its introduction marked the United States return to minting silver dollars after World War I and represents the final silver dollar series struck in large numbers for everyday use. Each of these 1927-S Peace Dollar Silver Coins arrives in a plastic slab and has been graded AU58 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. The AU58 grade means the coin has light wear in high spots and maintains much of its original shine and detail, placing it just below Mint State.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1927-S Peace Dollar Coin, de Franciscis design shows Liberty in profile facing left. Her hair appears loose and flowing, and the crown she wears resembles the suns rays, a detail meant to reflect a spirit of peace and progress. The inscriptions read LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRVST, and 1927.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1927-S Peace Dollar Silver Coin depicts a bald eagle at rest atop a rock. The eagle holds an olive branch and gazes toward the sunrise, symbolizing hope for peace and stability after a time of global conflict. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, PEACE, and the S mint mark.
History
The crown of rays on Libertys head was designed to reflect the countrys desire for peace following the Great War. Artist Anthony de Franciscis work was chosen through a design competition, which also included entries from well-known sculptors like Adolph Weinman and Hermon MacNeil.
