The modern version of the $50 Federal Reserve Note was released with the 1929 Series. Federal Reserve Notes debuted in 1914 with five denominations issued in the 1914 Series and a further four denominations in the 1918 Series. These original notes were issued in the now-outdated large-sized format. The debut of the 1929 Series marked the start of the modern, small-sized notes in production. The $50 Federal Reserve Note was first issued in 1914 with the 1914 Series denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 notes. When the US Treasury and the Bureau of Engraving & Printing debuted the new small-sized notes in 1929, the $50 Federal Reserve Note was issued with the same obverse design and a new reverse design. The U.S. Capitol Building on the reverse of these notes replaced the previous imagery that depicted the allegory Panama symbolizing the completed Panama Canal across the isthmus connecting North America and South America.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1929 $50 Federal Reserve Notes is an effigy of President Ulysses S. Grant. The 18th President of the United States, Grant served as the highest-ranking officer in the Union Army during the Civil War, helping lead the Union Army to victory over the Confederate Army. These notes have green ink on the serial numbers and the US Treasury seal.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1929 $50 Federal Reserve Note features a new design for the small-sized format. Here, the U.S. Capitol Building is found in the center of the design field. The image captures the building in the immediate foreground with the cityscape of Washington D.C. in the background. The Washington Monument is visible in the distant background.

History

The redesign of the $50 Federal Reserve Note after 1993 kept the U.S. Capitol Building on the reverse, but shifted the focus to a view of the building from the steps leading to its main doors, eliminating the image of the cityscape of Washington D.C. in the distant background.
