Obverse

The obverse of 1934a $5 Federal Reserve Hawaii Notes contains a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was first featured on the $5 bill in 1914 on the red seal Federal Reserve Notes, and a modified version of the portrait is still in use on them today. The serial number in brown ink is shown twice, once on the upper half of the right side and then again on the lower portion of the left side. Also included is the brown Treasury seal and the word Hawaii overprinted vertically on the left and right ends of the note.

Reverse

On the reverse of 1934a $5 Federal Reserve Hawaii Notes you will find a design of the Lincoln Memorial. This historic site is located in Washington DC and was officially dedicated in 1922. It includes a remarkable neo-classical outer structure and a magnificent statue of Lincoln inside. Overprinted across the vignette of the memorial on this note is the word Hawaii.

History

In the aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, US officials feared Japan might seize total control of Hawaii. The government quickly began recalling all currency in the state, amassing a stockpile of over $200 million that was eventually burned. In its place, the Federal Reserve issued emergency Hawaii notes that could easily be declared invalid if a Japanese invasion occurred. Today, these notes are considered relics of a bygone era and serve as a reminder of the great fear the attack on Pearl Harbor instilled in Americans.
