Up until 1964, the United States Treasury issued paper currency known as Silver Certificates. Backed by silver held in Treasury vaults, these Silver Certificates could be exchanged in commerce and eventually redeemed for the face value in silver. In 1964, these notes were removed from circulation and no longer used. Right now, you can get 1934a $5 Silver Certificates online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
With your purchase of the 1934a $5 Silver Certificate in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive a paper note that is in Choice Uncirculated condition. These notes come with no fold lines through the designs, but may feature a handful of minor flaws and design elements that are imperfectly centered on one or both sides of the note.
Obverse
President Abraham Lincoln is depicted in the obverse design of the 1934a $5 Silver Certificate. This portrait of President Lincoln is similar to the one still in use today on the modern $5 Federal Reserve Note. The frame style on these notes is known as the porthole for its resemblance to the portholes of a ship.
Reverse
The Lincoln Memorial is found on the reverse side of 1934a $5 Silver Certificate Notes. The design element shown here comes with the awe-inspiring appearance of the memorial located on the National Mall in Washington D.C. The monument was completed in 1922 and swiftly debuted the next year on the first $5 Silver Certificate with Lincolns portrait, the 1923 Silver Certificate.
History
The 1934 $5 Silver Certificate featured various small iterations indicated by the presence of a small a, b, c, or d. The differences came down to the combination of signatures on the obverse, with all Silver Certificates bearing the signatures of the Treasurer of the United States and the Secretary of the Treasury. The 1934a was the second version of the 1934 $5 Silver Certificate.
