One of the most important paper money issues of the small-sized Silver Certificate came in 1935. The US had just redesigned the notes in 1935, with the series used in several variations through 1957. During World War II, two special subsets of the 1935A Series, known as 1935a notes, were issued. Today, you have the opportunity to get 1935a $1 Silver Certificate North Africa Notes online at Provident Metals in Very Fine condition.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual protective plastic currency sleeve!
  • Distinctive version of the 1935A Series of $1 Silver Certificates!
  • Produced for US Troops in North Africa!
  • The face value of $1 (USD) is backed by the United States.
  • President George Washington on the obverse.
  • All-seeing eye and the Great Seal of the United States on the reverse.
  • Please remember these notes should have yellow ink on the seal on the obverse.

In 1942, the United States modified only the $1 denomination of the Silver Certificate for continued issuance in Hawaii and for issuance to US Troops in North Africa. The Hawaii notes were given a HAWAII overnote stamp to easily identify them as removable from circulation and demonetized should the Japanese invade Hawaii and capture circulation notes. The North Africa issues had no overnote stamp, but did have the same yellow ink seals. The goal was the same, to easily identify the notes for demonetization if captured in North Africa.

Obverse

President George Washington features on the obverse of the 1935a $1 Silver Certificate North Africa Note. Included on this side of the note is the yellow-ink US Treasury seal to the right of the portrait of Washington.

Reverse

The all-seeing eye and the Great Seal of the United States can be found on the reverse side of the 1935a $1 Silver Certificate North Africa Notes. This design element was authorized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

History

The original concept for the 1935 redesign placed the all-seeing eye on the right side of the field and the Great Seal of the United States on the left. President Roosevelt recommended swapping the two and this is the design that was not only used on the $1 Silver Certificate, it also features on the modern $1 Federal Reserve Note.

Ordering

These 1935a $1 Silver Certificate North Africa Notes are available with plastic currency sleeves. Each one comes in Very Fine condition, indicating the presence of moderate wear and tear, mild soiling, and fold lines.
